Recommended and match preferences

New grants recommended for each client, and how to choose what gets recommended.

Open Recommended in the portal

What Recommended shows

Recommended lists new grants from Grants.gov and the California Grants Portal that fit each client's match preferences. Open it from the Find menu. The count next to the title shows how many are open.

Each card shows the grant, the funder, its deadline with days left, and its number. Choose Grants.gov or CA Grants Portal to read the full listing, which opens in a new tab.

Choose Add to Grants for the ones worth pursuing. The grant moves from Recommended to Grants for that client. Choose the eye icon (Watch for changes) to hear about changes to a grant without adding it (see Alerts). Use the List and Grid buttons to change the layout.

Recommended lists federal and state grants, so it only shows for clients that plan to apply for government grants. Federal grants also need the client's SAM.gov details. If something is missing for the client you picked, a short line links to the client's page to add it.

Set match preferences

Pick a client in the Client menu, then open Match preferences at the top of the page.

  • Words to look for: words in a grant's title, such as workforce or literacy. Type one and press Enter or choose Add. Words suggested from the client's program areas show under the box; choose one to add it.
  • More options: only some federal agencies: limit federal grants to chosen agencies. Choosing a department includes all of its sub-agencies.

Each recommended grant says what it matched on, such as Matched on "literacy".

Choose Save preferences. GrantAssembly checks the grants open now right away, so recommended grants can appear within moments, and keeps checking new postings every hour.

How grants are picked

  • A federal grant is recommended when it's from one of the chosen agencies and its title contains one of the keywords.
  • Leave keywords empty to accept any title, or agencies empty to accept any agency.
  • With both empty, that client gets no recommended grants.
  • Keywords from the client's Programs count too, and a grant found by one says which program it is for.
  • California grants are picked on keywords only (in the title, categories and purpose), and only for clients based in California whose kind of organization can apply.

Narrowing your preferences later doesn't remove recommended grants you already have. Archived clients get no new ones.
